Nah, he's trying to argue the "dirty belt" tradition. It's silly. If it's a lie, they told it to us.
Actually, I was assigning the 'blame' to the liars that told it to us.
Particularly to anyone with even the vaguest idea of Japanese culture.
They
bring new meaning to the phrase "cleanliness is next to godliness" The
idea
that the Japanese would have belts so filthy that they turned black is
beyond
belief.
That would be true for the nobility-
but I don't think that 'judo' was a noble's art.
The largest numbers of Japanese wore rags- owned one set at that.
What Chas simply can't understand is that it was Kano who created belt
rank.
I would think 'assigned' would be more precise.
Although I think the 'swim team' story is very sweet.
*NO-ONE*, no nation, no other martial art, NO-ONE, before Kano had thought
to
give visual representation of martial knowledge and skill via the color of
one's
obi. It's not a Chinese custom, as Mike will assert, nor does it
originate
among Okinawaan Karate. In fact, it came from Judo, and *spread* to other
arts
that adopted it.
The belt was about keeping your pants up.
'Rank' wasn't necessary in village practice groups- as now, everybody knows
who does what.
Kano was dealing with large classes of school kids, and the usual huge
anonymous groups of adults.
A concommitant is the status conferred by 'wear' on the belt-
So Chas is picking up a second-hand rumor, and I'm presenting the
tradition
directly from the source.
GIGO-
your premises are wrong, so your conclusions are worse.
