Wrong. People use them because they come pre-installed on Windows.
Personally I don't know anyone who's used both IE and Firefox or Opera
who has stuck with IE. I don't know anyone who's used OE and
Thunderbird who hasn't gone with Thunderbird. But it takes work, and
most people don't put the effort in until they have a problem that they
know about.

I have. Because I like being able to use web sites and being able to see
them. With firefox and opera my online banking stopped working.

Let's hope it is working only for you and not for some people in
Romania :-) Seriously though, you are so right: a lot of the big
commercial entities outsourced their web comms work way back when and
made it purely IE, no compatibility, no standards. Sort of like the
rest of their business. One reason why I still don't use online
banking, unfortunately.

Though it's probably reasonably safe with the FDIC, I wonder if the OLB
sites aren't prone to become complacent with the 'secure site' and the
padlock icons and soforth. IOW, what was secure last week might not be so
secure tomorrow. They need to have incursion testing and keep everything
updated on both the vendor and the client side - no resting on the laurels.

I used to sit in on the meetings that the IT had since I was the manager of
that department for food services and it was a bit surprising each week how
more and more of the meeting was taken up with security problems,
installing server side filters, getting all the machines upgraded,
isolating infected machines, and locking down everything.
