While I don't support companies knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, and I feel that employers who do so deserve to be prosecuted criminally, your suggestions don't really address the issue.
You mean as contrasted with 'doing nothing', much less 'actively support'?
How about as opposed to doing something that actually addresses the problem? How about as opposed to actually checking the I-9's employers actually have to collect for all employees, and actually doing something about it when the information turns out to be bogus? The big roundup that happened a week or so ago, the company had been notified a number of times that there were problems with the I-9's. That wasn't what lead to arrests and investigations however, since the immigration people didn't have access to the social security records, and the notifications didn't result in any action being taken at all. The arrests came about because of tips that the company involved was actually helping illegal immigrants create false ID information and file fraudulent I-9's. Fixing this could actually make the I-9 process do what it was intended to do. Right now it's just window dressing.

I don't know where you live, but it must not be in an area with a substantial hispanic population. Lots of hispanics born in the United States who are US citizens have litte if any command of English. Their parents didn't speak English and bi-lingual education, created to try to keep Spanish speaking children from falling behind until they were able to speak English has allowed a generation of children to attend public schools and never have to learn to speak English.
Also, a fair number of US citizens don't speak English.
Who?
Eine yiddisher grandmomma? Three navajos? Doukobours?
Who?
This isn't anything new. German and Slavic immigrants in the 19th century often didn't move into a town, they would found a town. It took generations for English to become the first language of these immigrants.
don't hire anyone who's not signed up for a citizenship course.
Are you signed up for one?
I've stood for citizenship for applicants a number of times, and done the course with them as the process invites.
I have no problem whatsoever with 'immigration'.
Of course you're presumably a US citizen, but since my point was that it isn't all that simple to absolutely prove whether someone is a US citizen or not before you hire them, that doesn't really matter.
Our employment process generally requires positive identification, references to local credit or previous employers, a tax registration number of some sort; bona fides.
You do understand that your talking about the kind of documentation that most illegal immigrants obtain to get a job? In the round up they had a week or two ago, the one in all the papers, the employer was actually helping their employees to obtain this kind of documentation.
How exactly does it prove the point. Your statement was "don't hire anyone who flies a foreign flag." It wasn't "don't hire anyone who flies a foreign flag plus this string of other requirements that I'll add to my argument at a later date."
don't hire anyone who flies a foreign flag.
Do you have any idea how many US citizens, some of whom have been US citizens for generations, have a flag of the country their family came from?
And fly them down the street proclaiming how they're victims of the oppressive benefactor country?
It isn't just Mexican flags, it's German flags, Czech flags, French flags, etc....
Don't play the ingenue`.
Do you see Czechoslovakians complaining about mal-treatment in the US?
Are they publicly promoting a violent revolution against the US?
Do they proudly proclaim their racist basis for existance?
Or the Germans?
Ok; the French are assholes, but that just proves the point.
Also, since the statement you were replying to was that it wasn't possible to absolutely discern the citizenship of the people you were trying to hire, how do you propose to find out if they fly a foreign flag in the job interview?
Look at the chebby parked outside on the kerb.
