I don't know much about martial arts ,but it sounds like a pretty hard
thing to do and even with lots of training could be very imprecise
,just what i think

That's because you think rather than do.
Elbowing a punch is *easy*. Not only do you have about eight inches of
'reach' on him, you can control his targeting. He will punch where he thinks
he has an opportunity to hit you.
He's targeted on your body; you're targeted on his hands.
Not only that; if you miss his hand with your elbow, you're still able to
punch- he has to retract to punch again, or convert his action into a
grapple (at which time you're already loaded for elbows).
Your elbow has a lot more to target than just his front knuckles- anywhere
it intersects his hand/wrist/forearm, it not only hits him, it deflects him
from his target, and gets you closer to him as well.
