The fact that it took a male and a female to make the child is imho
irrelevant. Using that logic, why not insist the boy wears female clothes
too?

Because that's not my logic at all; I'm not suggesting you give a boy a
girl's name. I think you've missed my point... which is, it's a team
effort, so if either person absolutely *insists* that the child get
only his/her name, they're most likely pushing their own agendas
(whether stiff-necked conservative or feminist dragon) rather than
working together.

'Working together' doesn't mean putting everything up for grabs..it's a
matter of give and take. If as a male you forgo the naming, what are you
getting in return? Ask a woman who wants the naming this question. You'll
likely be met with a blank stare. It won't occur to her that she has to give
up something to gain something.

The woman that makes an issue of naming is really wanting to challenge
convention, usually for no other reason than seeing it as yet another (in
her mind) 'male thing' that is used to emasculate and subjugate women.

If you want to deal in stereotypes and absolutes, the man who
absolutely insists that the child gets only his surname is probably a
control freak terrified of women with their own personalities and is
desperately trying to keep hold of what little self-respect he has in
whatever way he can. :P

Maybe for some, but in most cases it's just wanting to keep a
convention/tradition in light of no good reason to give it up, other than to
satify the ego of a woman who desperately wants anything she thinks is her
'right'.
