My son was in a group of 3 and lost both fights, but I thought the kids
were all pretty even and it could have gone the other way for him. They
were both a little older and stronger so that was a bit hard. He's
disappointed but I hope to make him see the positive side - we'll go
over the video today.

Turns out there were only 3 guys in all the masters' categories, so they
put us all together. Both of the other guys were lighter than me by 20
lbs at least, OTOH they were both black belts, not sure how many dan.
First guy was about 10 years younger than me. He liked seionage, tried
it a bunch of times and got a couple of yuko that felt more like koka to
me (my instructor agreed). Mostly I was able to block it and ride it
into the ground, but they stood us up before I really had a chance to
get it going. I had two chokes and a bar that I felt were progressing
but... Couldn't get much going in the air with him, so he won with the
yuko.

Second guy was older than me, maybe early 50s. He was feisty though,
fought with the young guys as well as our division. He kept turning in
for some right handed forward throw, maybe seionage, I kept blocking him
before he could get in. Last time he turned I swept him, I guess you
would call it kosotogake but more of a sweep. I got the timing just
right, he leveled out in the air and landed flat, it was real purty. I
followed in for the hold but didn't need it, clear ippon. Yay, me.

The guy I beat also beat the younger fellow by ippon, so with a win each
they decided it on the record and I got the gold. Overall a good
experience, both of these guys played smooth and subtle, no muscley
stiff-arm action, not much chance we were going to get hurt - just what
I was hoping for. So maybe I'll try again next tournament my son
enters, it was fun.

Oh, and I passed nikyu a couple nights before, so all round a decent
judo week for me.

Neil
