Well, like I just said:

Horrid idea. Smacks of Totalitarianism that you'd expect to see in
Communist Russia or WWII Germany.

Tell you what.. We set up the laws to ban *FOR LIFE* any driver caught impaired from being behind the wheel of anything other than a lawn tractor, and I might fall into your category..

People are slime when it comes to this particular area.. and, frankly, this is one area I don't mind my personal rights taking second place to public safety.. The saving grace is that they're 'spot checks', they're set up to hit 'likely' targets and they're usually not that secret.. we have a whole "Check stop season" blitz on television when they gear up during the holidays..

There was a story about the primary reason for my opinion in today's papers..

The driver survived... his passengers didn't..

Not saying you're wrong.. just saying this is one area I don't really mind..

How 'bout we just execute people who murder other people?

It's not the "eye for an eye" thing.. it's the 'safety while getting on the road' thing.. Drinking and driving is socially acceptable in *many* areas.. and frankly, people will do it more often than not given the option.. I find myself frustrated when a DD gets off simply because h/s he was drunk.. we're not talking about something you can prepare yourself against here.. no amount of training will protect you from a ton of steel coming at you out of nowhere..

It's like the kids (this is going back to my Vancouver days) who used to race their high-end cars.. one guy hit a pedestrian and she flew about 150 meters before landing.. he got what amounted to a slap on the wrist for it..

Like I said.. this one is more a public safety issue..Penalties for DUI are not really deterrents, so I have no issues with the spot-check idea to keep people honest.. Frankly, I put this in the same category as metal detectors in clubs..
