If that's the case, and God's will is the best thing to follow (I would
assume this is a fundamental Christian tenet) - all the 'gift' of free
will is is a chance to do badly or to fail - is there any way that
having it is a benefit?

Sure. It's not *just* a chance to fail - it's a chance to succeed!

Sure; my point is that without it, we'd presumably succeed anyway -
given that a Biblical God would be unlikely to create us as doomed to
failure :) So the introduction of free choice only introduces failure.

Well yeah.

The free will bit is God voluntarily renouncing ominiscience,
regarding human fate. Sure, He could have created a universe
where His images all behave properly, and He sees everything
in advance. What a bore! That's the psychic's curse - the movie
is ruined when you know the ending...

So to keep some suspense, he gave us free will. Some join the
heavenly choir, some get Celine Dion for eternity. The angels
probably have an office pool... it's a great big cosmic sitcom.

My free will, for example, is driving me to a Friday evening beer. That
just can't be right!

Depends. If it's Bud, Coors, or Pabst, you are headed for brimstone
and damnation. The Lord is testing you...
