That's not what the grain running out is and it isn't what I called it.

Essentially it's when the grain doesn't run the length of the piece. Say,
for instance that the piece was sawn slightly at an angle to the grain so
that the grain runs at a very slight diagonal to the axis of the geometric
shape. And yes, it can be prone to splitting along the grain that way
since the stresses can be focused between grains by a strike.
