Most commercially cut hardwood, either barstock or dowel, aren't the best
choice since the grain will consistently run out. Make for good light
training & have the proper weight but not for *serious* striking practice.
Anyone who's capable of doing what Hal describes above ought to also be
able to pick good wood to do it with. Can also treat the final product
to make it stronger.
Maybe I'm biased - I like making weapons by hand :b
