Actually, I grew up bird hunting -- mostly quail -- we called 'em bob
whites -- and I know all about fields of fire with shotguns and flushed
birds, and how not to shoot the dog or the other guns in the field,
thank you very much. I got my first .410 when I was eleven, and that
was a year after my first .22 rifle.

If you have the gun, it is your job to know where it is pointing so
that *** *doesn't* happen. If bagging a bird is more important than
that, you should take up golf.

All that chaff everybody is releasing about Kennedy going off the
bridge and Al Gore is just that. You can blow all the smoke you want,
but when you are waving a gun around, it is your responsibility to
control the muzzle, period. I hunted all manner of flatland birds in
Louisiana, which isn't that much difference from that part of Texas,
and I never shot my co-hunters, and none of the dogs, either. Didn't
hunt with anybody who did.

You want to choose your hunting partners with as much care as you do
your enemies, so the old saw goes.

Cheney owned up to that, and if he'd done that off the bat, we wouldn't
be having this conversation. When they reported it and all the press
hoopla that followed, that's just part of the circus, that's not what
matters. What matters is that a major contributor to his party got
blasted by the veep, he's in the hospital, and not out the the medical
woods yet.

Blaming the victim is just bad form.
