The December issue of Black Belt magazine ran a couple
of decent articles. I'll review, for the scoundrels who let
their subscriptions lapse...

A JKD guru explained the straight blast punch, using
the lead (right) hand. It was detailed and well presented.
I wonder, though, has any pro fighter ever used that
technique, from the recommended posture, i.e. strong hand
lead? It looks reasonable, in isolation, but I'm not sure if it
integrates with other moves into a complete game plan.

There was one bit of aggravation, though. She (yes, she)
tried to bring some physics into the discussion - bad idea!
Specifically, she writes that to get the punch off faster,
one should 'cheat' by shifting the weight forward, onto the
front foot. Uh... if one is springing off the rear reg, as
suggested - the front foot comes off the floor, and hits
before landing - one must actually unweight the front leg,
which means shifting one's COG backward. I'm sure she
does this, but she's confused. A word to authors: avoid
physics, unless you enjoy wiping egg off your face...

I haven't read the article but I am interpreting what she was saying from what you have quoted here. She said "to get the punch off faster, one should 'cheat' by shifting the weight forward, on the front foot". and the following sentence said "impacting with front leg unweighted, for any strike to utilize gravity and body weight"

I think you have to read the whole sentence in one piece. She meant "to get the punch off faster, one should 'cheat' by shifting the weight forward, on the front foot. And then when you impact your target, you unweight you front foot so that you are falling (the front foot will adjust how much you fall) onto your target to utilize gravity and body weight". She is practically describing the Wing Chun falling step kind of punching method.

To ameliorate that, she recommends impacting with front
leg unweighted, for any strike, to utilize gravity and body
weight. Give her credit there.

The other article was by Gokor Chevynova, illustrating
six arm bars, on the ground, using only the legs. Look ma,
no hands! With setups and transitions. Okay, jujitsu mavens,
how many do you know? Only one was omoplata. I'm going
to learn these, then visit South Shore Sports and show Mahoney
a thing or three, heheheh
