If you do a search for "Xiaou" and "explosive" you
will find much more info Ive written. I will try to recap...
Firstly, Lets drop the "chi" part. Because most will dismiss chi
immediately as metaphysical BS. While I do believe in the unseen
energies.. This technique does not require such a thing. Its purely
physical perfection.
Next, lets discuss the 1" punch...
The 1" punch was derived from the "Wing Chun" system. But... the
power in it (sometimes called 'fa-jing'), has been in many kungfu styles
dating thousands of years old. Its true power and methods have usually
been closely gaurded, and only let out to those who were trusted.
Bruce Lee, a very dedicated artist, took enough WC (wing chun), to
understand the concepts (yet never completed the art). He used the
Principles, and made a demonstration version of the 'explosive'
punch.
There are 2 main things shown in the demo. 1) Shows that when
you punch you are close as possible so that the extention of your
elbow, arm, and hips will make short distance turn into a long
extending weapon. Bascially, shows body mechanics to achieve an
uproot - which makes the person fly backwads like he has been pushed
from a running start.
2) Shows a little bit of what explosive power is possible. But,
its watered down.
In a 1" demo.. most will push thier fists well thru the target. A push
in its very nature, is not harmfull.. because you are making the
energy flow past the vital areas.. moving the entire body
rather than inflicting damage into one small spot.
To do a truely damaging 1" "explosive" punch, you have to stop
your fist 'on a dime' once youve made solid contact with the vital
area. Not only that, but you have to lock every muscle in your body
at the same time.. so that you litterally become one solid piece of
stone at that exact split second.
If any part of you has not tensed up within less than like 1/32nd of
a second... you will lose almost half your mass and power transfer.
Unlike bruces demo punch.. You can do the punch without hip turn,
and no footwork either. But, to get the most power, you will want to add
the coiled and released hip turn.
A step added to it does not really mean more power.. because you may not
be able to use the full twist of the hip, and also, you might not hit when
fully grounded. If you arent grounded well.. you will absorb much of the
force backwards into your own body. You may also find the timing harder to
do this way.
You can however, use this power with nearly any type of strike. You can
even add the power to a hook punch for example. Though, a straight punch
is faster, and may be a better choice to use. Use of the explosive power
with a finger strike (if you have conditioned your fingers only!) will
be very dangerous if not leathal. The explosiveness in the punch is
bad enough... and caution should be tooken when using it on people. You
should be able to control the level of snap you put into it, and be able to
tone it down to a dizzy or KO. A fully drawn back, full power snap, could
very easily cause permanent damage (brain damages) or death.
Now, as I was saying... You want the force to litterally explode inside
the target. Some targets require different 'depths' to stop at. For
example, to do a dizzy, I will stop about 1/2" into the skull before
tightening (if i recall correctly) This will allow the neck to move
backwards a little first so that when I snap - the neck will not absorb as
much of the forces. Also, its about where I want the energy - in the
frontal area of the brain. Anymore than that - and I will just be pushing
his head backwards.
(you must have well conditioned fists to hit the skull! - or you will
hurt or break your knucles!)
Hitting the forehead will create a mini-earthquake in the brain, and it
will shut down, causeing a KO. However, if the quake is too strong, it
will do severe permanent damage to the internal tissues.
Hitting the stomache is diifferent. You have to get past a lot of the
muscles and tissues because the muscle/tissues act as a protective shield
and absorb too much force. Its like hitting a sponge. You want to push
into the sponge as far as possible till you hit the more 'solid' area that
is deeper.. then tighten. This will be about 5" deep... depending on If
they tighten thier stomache muscles. If they do, then it will be only
maybe 3". Once deep - snap - and it will be like a granade going off in
the center of the body. It does a ripple shockwave from that point
and travels outwards in an expanding spherical globe.
When you hit someone with this "Correctly" they will barly move
an inch. If they are thrown back - then you have done it completely
wrong.
Bruce said that you can combine the snap force then add the
push after the snap (seamless). However, when trying this, I realize that
you lose a lot of the power... because you litterally can not stop
completely and them get loose enough quickly enough to continue the push
part. So, while its possible - you will lose 'explosiveness' to do it.
Training:
Get a heavy duty sandbag. Fill it 3/4th full with metal bb's (small -
like 3mm). Hang the bag from a metal chain. (A single line - not 2)
Practice the tighten on 'solid' (1" deep?) impact from a distance of 1ft
away.
If you do it poorly, the bag will swing very far backwards.
You will not feel much pain from impact at all. Stop it, and
retry. It will take many many many many many tries. In 52 tries, you
might do it once. After you get good - you can nail it nearly every time.
If you do it propperly.. the bag will hardly swing at all. It will
be VERY painfull. It will feel as if you hit a solid steel beam! :) Your
fist will sting and turn bright red. Shake it off, rub it.. and do it
again...and again...ect.
You will also want to practice stopping right before a target. Try a
hanging towel first. Try to stop just before you touch it. Do this at
several distances away. Start from far.. then work closer and closer.
Then use the Iron bag, and practive on that the same way. And then,
use the explosive punch with it...
starting from 1ft.. untill get decent repeatable results. Then start
from 7" closer and closer...Untill you can do it from a single inch
and have very good results.
You can also use a technique where you use a coffee can filled with sand,
and you try to snap it - making it slide very far down a table as possible.
This is good for learning the 'push' aspect instead of just explosive.
What is happening?
When you push into the balls, they move out of the way, pushing each
other, untill it leaves a nice niche for your fist. Basically, like diving
into a pool - the water moves away, then conforms to your shape.
However - when you strike it very fast, and tighten on impact - you change
things. The balls can not move out of the way fast enough... so basically
they lock together as One solid object. You also cause an explosion -
which results in the bb's flying out in 'ALL' directions. (With a typical
punch, the bb's will mostly only go backwards)
You could say, that its like doing a belly flop onto the water! The soft
water surface becomes solid and hard as a rock - uniting as one massive
unit.
Other things to do:
Chest centered pushups (on fists) .. as slowly as possible in up and
down.
Hit a wall mouted sandbag for initial conditioning firstly.
Tiger pushups - legs and *** in the air, creating downward pressure.
Diamond Pushups.
A note about why its so powerfull...
The power starts with a lightning fast fist -
add the arm
the elbow
the shoudler
the torso
then snap the hip
add fast deep exhale thru nose + tighten all
The power builds up, like a whip or a high water wave.
While a traditional push-punch is still whip-like in nature, its
more like a guy trying to snap the towel but can not fully get it.
Somehow, he lost the timing and movments, and it fails.
While the correct Explosive punch is like a bull whip - with a perfect
and nasty snap to it.
However, to achieve this is no easy task. Its not only the arms that
need strength.. the muscles need to be able to coordinate at higher
speeds, and be accurate withing factions of seconds. The entire body also
has to be in shape - else you will either hurt your own body when snapping,
or cant snap with much power. You will need to learn to be very loose,
and relaxed to do it. Tight muscles will have to be loosened. (unbuilt
and stretched out) Time spent conditioning the fist, to be able to
handle the output to bone targets.
It took me about 1yr to perfect the WC straight punch. And maybe another
4 months to add repeatable powerfull 'explosive-power' to it.
This power - goes well beyond a 'Drop-step'
A Jeet Kun Do guy did a 1" explosive demo! thru a 4" phonebook to my
chest.. and my chest was in serious pain..felt as if it was on fire!
Burning intensly for 4 hours long! While I can do the punch well, Ive
never developed it to that degree! : ) Amazing and scarry. Add one more
inch distance, and you probably quadruple the power output!
