I like even his early films. He was a bit wooden in RotD, but after GGWB,
he was pretty decent. He took acting lessons with Strasberg, iirc.

One of the ways to judge acting ability, quick and dirty is how well
someone does love scenes - uh, G-rated kissing and interacting with the
female lead. Many good looking sports stars are horrible - no close-up
charisma, but Chuck was ok. Not great; not even very good, but passable.

Now, granted he'd never be a Cary Grant - he's best at action films, though
he's tried comedy. Fire Walker was his best, and I think Lou Gosset Jr. was
partly responsible for that. Good chemistry and all.

PS fighting: In 1968 he became the Professional World Middleweight Karate
Champion, holding the title undefeated until he retired in 1974. That was
limited contact, safe-t-kick style, fought on the gymnasium floor, not in a
ring. He was much better than you see on-screen. When I saw him and his
brother in person I was surprised at how good he was. Much more skilled and
athletic than you see in any of his films, imo.
