Interesting reading.
Here is what I collected with a few quick google searches. I
purposefully excluded stuff that came from obviously biased sources
like HCI, The Bradys, Million Mom March, etc. .
Take a look at the chart "Map & Graph: Crime: Murders with firearms
(per capita)" at
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/cri_mur_wit_fir_cap
It makes it pretty clear that the US has higher rate of gun murders per
capita
that anywhere in the UK, and anywhere in Euroupe. The US is #8 (with a
lot
of violent 3rd world countries such as South Aftrica, Columbia, etc.
ahead of it), Switzerland is #19, Canada is #20, Ireland is #26,
Australia is #27.
The UK in general comes in last on their list (which doesn't include
Japan) at #32. After #15 the rate is 0.00 deaths per 1,000 people, so
it's unclear exactly how many more murders there are in say Canada than
Ireland.
Also check out the stats in this medlab article:
http://www-medlib.med.utah.edu/WebPath/TUTORIAL/GUNS/GUNSTAT.html
Here's a quote from it:
"The number of firearms injuries remains high in the United States,
compared with most of the rest of the world. Firearm suicide rates are
strongly impacted by the rate of gun ownership. (Kaplan and Geling,
1998) There is a positive correlation between homicide rates and
availability of guns in developed nations. (Hemenway and Miller, 2000)"
Also check out this article at medicienet.com:
http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=6166
"The United States leads the world's richest nations in gun deaths --
murders, suicides, and accidental deaths due to guns - according to a
study published April 17, 1998 by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) in the International Journal of Epidemiology.
The U.S. was first at 14.24 gun deaths per 100,000 people. Two other
countries in the Americas came next. Brazil was second with 12.95,
followed by Mexico with 12.69.
Japan had the lowest rate, at 0.05 gun deaths per 100,000 (1 per 2
million people). The police in Japan actively raid homes of those
suspected of having weapons."
