I thought that was for removing hair...

All kidding aside, no kidding? Salt water and a battery? I
remember
doing science experiments like that, you'd put a penny in lemon juice
and
a nail on the other wire and the nail would get copper plated. What
happens
to the rust, though? And why doesn't the salt water just totally
corrode the
thing??

The salt makes the water more conductive. that is the only reason it
is there.
anything that increases the conductivity will work.
Rusting is a chemical reaction which results in iron and oxygen
bonding. With
the input of energy (electricity) the process can be reversed. There
is a long
drawn out explaination that I ain't gonna type in here but can be
found in a
basic chemistry book.

If you make the complete circuit. However the Iron you free would not
go back to it's old location. It would most likely fuse with all the
iron in contact with it.

I suggest dropping the knife if a jar of oil.

Google "electrolytic rust removal" get links like this
http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/rust/electrolytic_derusting.htm

Looks like you want a basic not acidic solution.
