I thought pool was the poor man's snooker or 3-cushion billiards.

'pool halls' are for poor people- and they cost like hell to set up.

I think back to some of the pool halls I used to play in in lower
Manhattan.... dark dingy places with shaded lamps over each table....
the little rat-faced guy sitting on a three legged stool behind the
counter... 9-ball being played on most tables, or a-pocket-apiece....
Right out of a grade B movie!

Much like a driving range-

You can spend $100K on a table; a grand for the balls; thousands more for
a
room to put it in.
I can see it for the slate of the table, and the degree of
craftsmanship for the balls, and if you're using platinum for inlay
work, even for some cues, but $100K for a wooden stick with some
ivory?

Same could be said for a $100K shotgun- or an oil-painting of a cuestick by
someone like Picasso.
first comes functionality, then the ornamentation, then the craftsman-

Yeah, it's got to the be brand-name game. I'm lucky I gave it
up. I'd hate to think what the chalk costs today!! :o)

You can now get a dozen sorts of chalk- some of which are quite dear.
