I'm sharpening the spey blade of my sowbelly on a diamond plate and I can smell the iron. Does steel give off fumes? It's always puzzled me, that.
All smells are caused by tiny particles of the substance ending up inside your nose---at least that's always been my understanding. If something doesn't physically contact the ends of your olfactory nerves then you can't smell it.
Right?
Smell particles are everywhere, however somtimes they are in a great enough concentration that people notice them.
My wife can smell the steel on me, and she hasn't come into contact with any hard particles.
