Oh, yeah.. come to the dark side....:-)

Which brand did you buy? How big, how thick?

Wow is that thing slow to

grind!

It sure is slow to grind. What I do is to use a Norton 20X (extra
coarse) flap wheel on an angle grinder for easy and fast stock
removal. Just clamp the blade onto a narrow peice of hard wood and
grind away...

Question: since it's high speed steel, which is supposed to be able to
be run hot without losing temper, how hot can I get it while grinding
before I have to start worrying about de-tempering it? Can I run it
until it gets red against the belt or do I need to treat it like any
other steel?

Alvin, the HSS guru will be responding to your post at his earliest
convenience, and all your questions will be promptly answered :-)

According to Alvin, it takes an hour to bring the hardness down one
degree.
When I grind the blade holding it in my hand, I dip it in water when
it gets too hot to hold comfortably. However, it can get too hot too
fast at times, as you will find out soon. Have a bucketfull of cold
water next to you, so you can dip your hand in it when needed:-) It
can be used to dip the blade too...
One thing to keep in mind is , if you get any part of the blade red
hot, wait for a while before you dip it in water. If you dip the blade
in water while one part is red hot, you will most likely make the
steel crack. Ask me how I know this :-) I even knew about this from
Alvin'ds posts, before I started grinding.

Remember to take a lot of photos and post it so we all can see what
you did and how you did it.

Congratulations....and... Godd luck.

Mathew

To OB1 you listen! (just watched Star Wars with my kids, sorry...)

Good advice, OB1, thanks! I've got my belts now and angle grinder,
now it's off to get a flap wheel, and then, the hardest part of all,
make some time for it! Wooo Hoo!

Right behind you Pete, I've got some HSS M2 that I'm going to try and
make into some sort of an edged tool!
