Grip finishing

I've never been much of a wood worker, (much of any kind of worker,
for that matter...) though I did make a Pennsylvania Long Rifle stock
once from a kit, and I don't know much about finishing the handle on
my DaDley.

I'm using birdseye maple, so obviously I don't want to paint it.....
And I don't have 'local' access to the stuff I used when making that
rifle stock 25 years ago, much less remember what it was. The name
'TrueOil' seems to stick in my mind, and I see that on the net, but
don't want to take the time to order it. You know I like 'fast and
easy.'

I've gone through the archives of rec.woodworking and got some
differing ideas; tung oil, shellac, polymer varnish, boiled linseed
oil, etc.

You guys have any good suggestions for locally found finishes. FAST
ones... :o)
I would really like to bring out the grain of this wood. Birdseye
Maple is pretty stuff.
(No.... I will NOT dip it in lard, Alvin! My wife suggested some of
that plastisol handle dip stuff for tools. Whatdaya think? Yellow?)
