How can denying them access to the internet be "feeding the Trolls"?
No one has suggested denying them access to the internet. Not a single
poster.
All we are asking is that they post in the correct venue and leave
this one alone.
I'll repeat what Steve Kramer said, as I think he put it very well;
"I like this group, and don't want to see it go the way of so
many others. Good, sharing, knowledgable people leaving a group
because their
newsreaders can't filter out the garbage. So they take their toys and
go somewhere else. That leaves just those who came looking for
knowledge and those who wish to tell us about the various off-topic
subjects. Again, I'm not saying that these topics shouldn't be
discussed. I'm
saying there are better venues for them, filled with people who wish
to read them and can do so when ever they wish"
I'll second that.

Hi Justin,
Actually I suggested it, although I was not as blunt as I could have been :-
"How about we inform them politely that this is not the right forum,
then send the offending message to their ISP, and continue to do so
until the misguided creatures get the message"
I have had success with this before and had peoples access to the
internet revoked.
Just go to the ISP with the evidence, and usually the client gets a
warning unless it directly goes against the ISPs acceptable use policy
then it's immediate termination of service.
Even if the offender hides behind google, yahoo! or lycos, the original
ISP can eventually be contacted.
I agree 100% that off topic posts shouldn't happen, but whether we
ignore them or not in an unmoderated group there's no way to avoid them.
What actually makes people leave groups more than off topic posts is
abuse. People don't stay when they're told they are stupid even if it's
inferred. Abuse is far more damaging.
Regards Charles
I hesitate to comment as I am a rather recent reader of this group but
I did read rec.boats for years until it deteriorated into a few idiots
that seemed to simply take an opposition position to any post and
argue, sometimes for weeks, that they were right and the rest of the
world wrong.
These people seem to thrive on any opposition and I've always felt
that they were the type of people that were afraid to voice their
opinions except over some form of antonymous medium.
As these people appear to thrive on opposition my suggestion would be
to simply ignore them. don't answer; don't advise them that the
subject if off topic; just ignore them. I suggest that if they never
receive a response to their drivel they will move their activities to
some other group.
As they seem to get their jollies from
