Re: What computer for juggling videos?

Thanks for the advice, guys :) I didn't even know about graphics and video
cards, so that was very helpful. Can you still add a card if the computer
already has a low quality one? I want a laptop if it can do the job,
because it's portable and I can work on it wherever I want, and takes less
power, which will help because the only electricity we have is a small 12
volt battery/solar/wind system with inverters. Also, at WalMart the
laptops and desktops are very close to the same price, but the laptops
have more RAM and the desktops more hard drive. So if I can add a hard
drive to the laptop later I'd prefer a laptop.

Graphics cards and video cards are the same thing :P

The power consumption will also not be very noticeable. You can still get
a good desktop that
conserves energy. I was under the same mindset when I bought my laptop,
but mobility never became
an advantage, I hardly ever used it outside my room, so that was pointless
for me.

I would not buy a computer from Walmart. I haven't been in 1 but a
computer specialist shop will
definitely be better. Since you'll be dishing out around $1000, you might
as well shop around. Don't
trust the information they have at Walmart either. Desktops generally have
more of everything, I have
a feeling the shop only mentions some basic attributes of a computer so
comparing them won't necessarily be beneficial. The computers there won't
be aimed towards a video editing purpose either
so rule that one out.

My advice is to consider how you're going to use your computer. If you're
going to do HD, get a good
one, from a company like Dell.com or a good local supply. If you're doing
normal SD footage, most
average spec computer will do.

I don't live in the U.S so my information is only partially relevant.
You'll wanna find an expert there to
make this decision for you and get a good price.
