Re: Unicycling Help Required

Hey man.

All the advice given so far is good, listen to it, but I would add the
following.

Firstly, before you set off, rock back and forth on the cycle before
you even think about moving. This will give you a feel for the
balance. It will tell you where your 'balance envelope' is. Horrible
term, but useful. If you know how far you can push it before actually
stacking off the thing, thats good.If at any time you are still in
that envelope, dont step off, try and correct. You are stepping off
too early when you could still correct.
This will also give you help in correcting sideways drift, as well as
setting out from different pedal positions.

Secondly. Dont have that second stack of boxes there. You know they
are there, and are probably leaning to the left because you know have
support. If you have no support available, you know you are going to
have to do it right. That is just leading you into bad habits of
leaning. DO NOT lean to one side, unless you like circles. Have
something to hold on to when you mount, and then no support at all.

Thridly, get some guts. You are going to fall off that thing. And it
is going to *hurt*. You've done the sensible thing and got protective
gear. If you feel you are getting unsteady, keep going untill you have
a fall. If you try never to fall off, you'll never learn to ride it.
Don't go for perfect balance, because that is damn near impossible. Go
for distance. Every time you get on, go for that extra foot, even if
it means a faceplant into that nice soft grass...

I've taught people to ride a unicycle within two days before, thats
good advice there, even if I say so myself. I learnt to ride on grass
too. It is hard, but it makes a nice smooth road so much easier. Trust
me, when you get it, its brilliant. Keep going, in every sense of the
term.

Lean forwards, your legs should be working like hell to keep up with
your body.
