3. In my opinion no, unless it is something VERY obvious about your
personality or appearance. It gets pretty annoying when people have
stage names, especially when they have a different one for each type
of show they do. (i.e. a different name for renaissance faires,
festivals, colleges, schools, cruise ships, etc..)
So In my opinion no stage name is good, but thats definetly something
that is up to you.
I agree with everything you said Erik, except about the stage name
issue, with the exception of having different stage names for every
venue which would be bad, in which case, I do agree with you there,
Erik. Make sense? ;-)
I've been performing for several years now, and am doing better than I
ever have been before, and I am looking to drop "Jason Kollum" and
change to a stage name, but it will be that same stage name that will
be used no matter what I do--juggling, balloon artistry, stilt-
walking, etc.
In the family market, which is where I'm at, it's all about name
recognition, and I can tell you the guys that are doing really well--
granted they are in their mid to late 40's now, and I'm just 28, those
guys all have a stage name that cooky, funny, and really stand out.
I'll be calling about a venue, and maybe will be told they've already
booked their juggler, and they will say we have "flying fool" or
"circus boy" or whomever. Nobody probably knows their real names,
it's their stage names people--and kids--remember.
Having a stage name that is easy to say, spell, and remember, will
help to generate recognition in your market, and eventually people
will only know you by that name.
I haven't thought of one yet, and I'm not updating my marketing
materials until I do.
There is a new entertainer in Chicago who does balloons--I just
figured out his real name the other day, his emails to me would be
using his stage name. I think that's a great idea, to always use your
stage name, you become sort of a pseudo-celebrity in your area.
While "Jason Kollum--Juggler and Variety Entertainer" was good for me
2 years ago, I feel it's outdated and rather boring. My marketing
materials are very nice and colorful and descriptive, but until I
figure out a stage name based upon either something I do, or something
that just comes to me, it's going to have to stay that way, and
hopefully for not too much longer.
I think using a separate stage name for the Ren Faire is one thing--
it's such a different type of venue, really demands something new.
But I think overall, having one stage name that follows you throughout
your career for talent you are performing with, not only adds to your
professionalism, but will help get your name out there to people who
want to buy your act or whatever you do.
Jason Kollum...well, for now.
