Are you insulted that they used an insincere compliment to beg for
money? You didn't answer the question. How should they have begged
for money? I want to know what acceptable begging etiquette is.

I don't know what acceptable begging etiquette is, but here's a little
story about what isn't:

I've had a few rough patches in my career and I used to deliver pizzas
to get by. Last winter I was living in Florida, pretty freaking broke,
barely making rent and paying for groceries and the air conditioner on
my car broke. It was like 95 degrees (35C or so) , I was roasting in
my car at a stop light, both windows down, no breeze and four hot
pizzas in the passsenger seat beside me. I have my pants rolled up to
my knee and the sleeves of my heavy knit uniform shirt rolled up as
much as they can be and the sweat is rolling down my body. Aside from
my uniform shirt and hat and the pizzas sitting next to me there's
also a big magnetic sign attached to the top of my car that says:
PIZZA. Clearly I'm at work.

So, while I'm stopped at the light this bum wanders across the
intersection to my car and askes:

"Hey, can you give me some money for beer?"

Me: blank stare that says, "really? are you serious? are you really
asking me for beer money right now?"

Him (offended): What? At least I didn't lie. (staggers off)

Ok, seriously that was fucked up. I don't care how messed up your life
is, you don't ask for beer money from someone who's clearly working.
The fact that I was barely getting by at the time only made it more
insulting. Like I'm really sweating my ass off driving all around town
just to give my grocery money to some random guy so he can drink his
life away? I don't think it's going to happen.
