First of all, thanks Az, Jason, Fak, Chiok, Charlie, Dave and Paul for the input. I'll comment on a couple of things here (probably not just things Paul brought up).
Like I said somewhere earlier, I've been watching photos and videos from Bungay for some years now and I always think: "that seems very nice, I could really enjoy that". Now I've been semi-seriously thinking about actually going next spring.
Hurrah!
It is a nice little daydream so far, yes.
How much were the meals/beers on site, or do you all go to the brewery and get your own?
I drank mostly beers from the brewery this year, although there are a
couple of reasonably sized supermarkets near by if you want more variety
and/or a nice single malt.
Or if you are a heavy drinker and want some cheaper beer along the nicer ones from the brewery...
Last year the festival fee was £75 so next year it probably wont be over £100/150 €.
I'm budgeting on about £80 for the festival fee next year, but fully
expecting it to be a little less than that. It's always better to over
budget ;-)
Ok, I'll change mine to 80/120 too.
Transportation to and from festival: 100 €.
You can probably do it on public transport for about £50 - alternatively
you can blag a lift. I'll probably end up driving past stanstead
anyway, I did this year. I'm sure I'm not the only one :-)
Now I'm changing this to "however little I dare offer someone that LP or Charlie is hooking me up with".
A single malt-bottle for chilly nights 35 €.
Sounds about right ;-)
That should get me a basic Laphroaig at the airport.
Food and drink: ???
My tab for the week came to about £70 and that's based on me having
breakfast and evening meal pretty much every day, with the occasional
lunch, desert and cup of tea.
Beer wise I think I spent about £50 at the brewery, although that would
have been cheaper had I known about their cases of "badly labeled beer"
earlier in the week.
Note to self: remember this. And of course the "I've come from a faraway country to taste your excellent beer." -strategy.
You say you like to eat and drink well, I think you could eat and drink
*very* well without doing anything rash like "cooking for yourself" for
a total of £150 for the week.
If I end up being an adult about this and actually start saving money for it, this is pretty much what I'd like to do. There are 10 paydays between now and then and the difference per month is peanuts.
You could also "do it yourself" and survive on local supermarket fayre
for about £20 for the week.
No thanks.
These numbers are on the high side as I can probably get the flights quite a bit cheaper, but you get the idea.
It's better to come home with money than to run out half way through :-)
Absolutely. I am a bad financial planner in my everyday life and holidays do not make me better at it.
What have I forgotten?
As others have said, you might want to factor in a spot of cash for a
daytrip somewhere (£20 should do it)
Yep.
and a pound a night if you're
going to be playing a lot of poker.
But that's poker money - it has little or no resemblance to real money.
Personally I also have to factor in things like "film for the camera"
but you're digital these days aren't you?
Yes. I just got a new (but used) Olympus C8080W. It's brilliant.
I have a sleeping bag that I've slept in during winter here in Finland, so I don't think may in the UK will be much of a problem.
Ha, I just visited the website of the brewery. I've had their Honey Porter. It's not bad at all.
So now we have a guess of:
Flights, Helsinki-Stansted: 200 €.
Transportation to and from festival: 30 €.
Festival fee: 120 €.
A single malt-bottle for chilly nights 35 €.
Food and drink: 225 €.
Daytrip: 30 €.
Swimming trip á la Jason 4,5 €.
Which makes it a bit past 600 euro. So if I'd manage to set aside 50 a month and say 400 from my tax returns, I'd live like a king and possibly be able to visit somewhere during the trip.
I seriously have to think about this.
Thanks again all.
