Google groups is very good, however I do not like the way that it presents
a threaded topic in a 'bulletin board' fashion.

its free and I dont have any problems with
it, now ive worked out how it works. I've never seen how a proper
newsreader does it, so I dont know any different.

If you are happy with Google Groups (and I don't see why you shouldn't be)
don't worry about it. The few old sods who keep shouting about 'proper
newsreaders' are entitled to their opinions, but are easily ignored. They
just don't seem to understand that the people like to use world wide web
is a portal for all their other internet services such as usenet, mail,
and even IRC chat.

And why the hell not?

I dont see why more
people dont use this, its quicker than the IJDb.

Maybe not for much longer ;-)
