That was pretty amazing. I also liked the earlier trick with the two
segment snooker cue. It reminded me of the classic trick of throwing a
candle from a candlestick-holder, lighting it in mid-air, then
re-catching it in the holder. Does anyone still perform that trick?
I was wondering if the wick is treated with paraffin or some other
substance so that it lights quickly?
From what I remember reading about the candle trick, the candle is
normally made of wood, weighted at the base to make it easier. The
wick end is normally either a stub of candle, or (more commonly) just
a wick secured into the fake candle.
I had no idea that it was a faked candle, however I doubt it makes the
trick much easier. It also means that the prop is re-usable. I would
certainly like to have a go at this trick. But really can't be bothered to
go to all that effort to create a wooden candle.
I've not seen anyone perform it in recent years, but I'd really like to.
Along similar lines though, there are people around performing the
"throw a matchbox in the air and strike a match on the side of it" which
(to my mind at least) is the obvious buildup to the candle trick :-)
I have not seen, or even heard of that one before. How do you manage to
get enough pressure between the match and the airbourne box in order to
make it light. Or is it rigged somehow?
If anyone has seen the candle trick recently, or (even better) has it on
video, please shout!
Indeed. Please do.
Have you seen Oliver Grovsner (I know the spelling is wrong on that one -
but I can;t find him on google) perform the Bobby May lighting a cigarette
in the mount trick?
There is a lot of great stuff on britishpathe, it would be cool if someone
could index it - I occasionally poke around but feel like I am missing out
on a lot of great stuff. I haven't properly read the copyright notices but
I guess you cannot just put this videos onto your webpage?
Unfortunately you can't reuse the sample videos. I did at one point
look into how much it would cost to pay for the rights to use footage
from pathe on a website, or even a DVD (What a DVD it would be!) but
they're prohibitively expensive.
How about just a bunch of links to the video pages as you did on your
previous post? I could probably even modify the IJDb video database to
store this sort of information.
