Sometimes you just have to laugh it off

Finally managed to go hunting this year... and it's just worth laughing
at. After being deployed a year, moving, having surgery to fix some
battle damage, you name it, I finally can walk well enough to hunt.
During lunch breaks past the couple weeks I found a few good trails,
figured out the deer movement pattern (where they feed, bed, and transit)
and had it PEGGED for at least zipping a doe with a Muzzy for the freezer,
and maybe getting a shot at a decent sized 4x4 with a wierd angled tine
I'd seen after dark cruising the nearby cornfield. Try scouting on
crutches, really makes you appreciate the mobility of two strong legs. So
anyhow, while in a walking cast I put in a ladder stand pretty far back
from the choke point on a couple trails so as not to stink up the area and
minimize my presence. All set!

Finally out of the cast. And the rains came. And came. And came. Close
to 6 inches of downpour over a week. The woods are flooded. But hey, I
have a pair of Cabelas brush buster chest waders... so I went in anyways
and never sprung a leak. My stand is now in 3 feet of standing water.
There's a slight rise about 30 yards from my stand, I hoped it would be an
island, and maybe attrack something to bed there. No such luck, it's
under water too. But after making it to my stand I was a bit tired, so I
decide to climb in and sit, rest awhile, and maybe by some odd chance a
lost deer looking for dry land would come swimming through. Stranger
things have happened. So I sit. I test my pin light. Not working, maybe
it got splashed on during the wade in. So I unscrew it from the pin
shroud. Yep, damp. I dry the batteries and inside, and it comes back to
life. Great! I try to screw it back in the shroud... kerplunk! it slips
out of my hand and falls into the 3 feet of water below me. Apparently
also surprised a lurking catfish who tail splashed and took off to the
main channel.

Tomorrow I go back with a trotline and fishing rod. Might be the last
chance I get to catch fish from a tree stand. And if someone asks if
I "caught" anything while hunting I might be able to say yes! Wish me
luck!

Oh, and on the drive home I saw the weird tined buck hangin with a few
does by the 12th hole of the golf course next to the hardwood stand.
Life's just not fair.
