Steve what I find here, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, is that
early in our season, it opened on Monday, that you can move a little
more freely, and most of the shots will be closer, so I go with my 20
Gauge SxS which is nice in the tight New England woods. Later in the
season once the leaves start falling then it's harder to move, and
they can see and hear you coming much farther away so I go to the .22
with a 3x9 scope with a sling. Then I really like to go in the morning
while there's still some dew, and moisture so walking is a little
quieter. Getting in and finding a little rise, or ridge to sit on so
you can scan a bigger area, and are shooting downhill for the most
part is nice too.
Only drawback I hit with that was when some kid started blasting away
at one over the top of the ridge right behind me. Using the sling, and
supporting against a tree is pretty solid for the 50 yard or so which
is about the longest I seem to be willing to take. Spotting works both
ways, and you can usually get closer when they go frozen. Nice to have
someone else along when they keep ducking around the backside of the
tree to either move them, or take the shot. Good to have company
sometimes too.
Welcome aboard David. Squirrel hunters really seem to be a dying
breed out this way today. It's a real shame too IMO.
