Re: bow hunting

Adam,

You are in for a great time! I subscribe to the KISS method (keep it simple
STUPID), well the stupid is me.... You didn't way what set-up you are
shooting but I am going to guess and compound with sight, peep, and a
release aid.

Anyway, if you are just starting out I would stay with Easton XX75 arrows
for a while, super nocks. Don't go below a 13 on the last two size digits
(Like 2213), or over a 14, unless you are finger releasing and that is a
WHOLE DIFFERENT BALL GAME! The reason I suggest this is that THE carbon
arrow advantage is speed and a little more penetration (if your bow is tuned
properly). Aluminum arrows will shoot a little slower than most carbons but
this will help you in making the bow quieter and easier to tune and be
consistent with. It may also aid in broadhead flight since your speed is
down. Then once you get a handle on consistency and learn more about the
bow and how to shoot and tune it, you can consider more speed. And
not to scare you, but my best hunting bud had a carbon explode on release
and it took three surgeries to repair the damage and get all the carbon
removed. Aluminum can still break but it won't fragment like carbon.

Broadheads are funny and everyone will have a different recommendation. The
truth is there is no telling which one will shoot best on your bow. One you
can shoot well with practice tips check your bow by shooting a fletched
arrow through a piece of thin paper at about 6 feet. Shoot three holes and
check them for consistency. You want a perfect round hole in the center, or
a tear where the back or your arrow is tearing about 1/4 inch higher than
the front. Then you can screw on your broadheads and see how they do. You
may have to try several different ones to see that is most consistent. To
learn about the ins and out of paper tuning your bow I think Easton has that
info on their site. If a broadhead flies good, then the only requirement in
my opinion is that it is razor sharp when you shoot an animal with it. The
most used broadheads around here are Rocky Mount Razor heads, 3 bladed
muzzy, Thunderheads are really good. The weight depends on your set-up and
arrow weight. I shoot Rock Mountian Snipers.

I would stay away from any overdraw effect over 1". Overdraws make a bow
less forgiving.

Arrow straightness is only as good as the bow set-up and the skill of the
archer. For whitetails at 20 yards or less I wouldn't get hung up over it.
If you could see in slow motion what your arrow is doing when you release it
you would pee in your pants. It looks like spaghetti coming off the rest!
If you want to see something freaky, hold your bow in front of your computer
screen with a fairly white screen and pluck the string. The refresh rate of
the monitor allows you to see you string oscillate. I can't see that a .001
difference is going to do unless you are shooting game at very long ranges
(not recommended, especially for a novice), or shooting competitively.

Some other helpful tips for hunting and to avoid common mistakes:

Use a loose fitting wrist strap and don't squeeze the bow with your bow
hand, let it sit in your relaxed palm at full draw. Experiment with hand
position.

Use a large holed peep for low light conditions (mine is almost 1/4")

Have a seasoned archer look at you shoot and be sure your draw is not too
long (this is the most common thing I see)

If you hunt from an elevated stand practice from one. If so consider a
pendulum sight.

Don't believe everything you read in magazines. Remember they are there to
SELL stuff

Keep your strings and cables waxed for longer life

hunt with an armgaurd even if you don't need one (to keep clothing away)

Find a quieting stabilizer that balances your bow well.

Don't tell your wife how much you pay for anything related to archery or
hunting!

Get you a big one!

I am new to bow hunting. Seasons are much longer here in PA. Looking for
advice for a good all around run of the mill arrow shaft and broad heads.
Are the Gold tips worth the extra cash, are the new composites as straight
as they advertise.

Let me know your opinion.....
