2003 Leupold VX-II 3-9x40???

Hello Folks,
Just purchased a new, factory sealed, Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 from my local gun
shop. I opened the box to find a 2003 brochure and a scope with a 2003
serial number.
I was using quick release mounts on my T/C Encore. The objective lens is
about 1/32" away from the barrel, no room for a cap/cover. QR mount and low
QR rings (as recommended by Leupold's web site). So, I was going to order
some threaded Leupold caps or the RainKote system only to find that there
were improvements in the 2004 and up models.
I plan on bringing this scope back and requesting an up to date model.
Am I being petty? It cost me almost $400.00 to walk out of the shop with
scope, rings and mount. I would expect it to be 110% of what I was looking
for.
Also, is the scope too close to the barrel or is closer better (I had to
take the rear sight off...)?
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Gary
.
