Well dirt and spit (applied to the finger) are free. Method #2 is not that
effective unless the wind is blowing hard enough to tell anyway. There are
many other things you will find in the woods that will work.

Non itchy insulation would be about the same as what Cabela's sells. Any
fine powder works; baking soda or talc. Put in one of the salt or pepper
shakers that have a lid that are sold for campers. Keep in mind not to use
anything scented. Baking soda fits that but clumps. There are non-scented
talc powders.

Any of you guys (or gals) have any good ideas for a cheap and handy
wind direction finder? The stuff I have seen in the stores is kinda
expensive for repeated use and not easily refillable. I'm open to any
ideas. Taking up smoking doesn't seem the answer.
