In the desert were I grew up we mostly left them alone unless somebody was
buying at the time. However around my folks grocery store we killed all
poisonous snakes we discovered for obvious safety reasons. I killed a few
with a BB gun, and I found a .410 shotgun did a nice job of cutting their
heads off at a safe range of 10-20 feet, but I'ld have to say a plane old
contractor's shovel was the tool of choice when it was necesary to kill a
snake.
