I have a similar ability with the stock market. If one of my friends is
thinking of buying a stock, the send it to me for evaluation. I analyse it
to the best of my ability and tell them whether to buy or not. They do
exactly the opposite of what I recommend and make a killing.

When I salvaged an IBM XT (it made noises like a coffee grinder) with a
black/amber 14" monitor, I was able to save my writing on the 5 1/4"
floppy (really floppy) disk. Previously I had been mailing hard copy to
my editors, usually by Express Mail.

Simultaneously with the computer, I discovered FedEx and began sending in
the floppies by "messenger".

Then, one day, an editor asked if I had a modem. I said "Sure" and she
have me the address of their "mailbox" and asked me to send my work in
that way. I called my son and asked, "Hey, kiddo, what's a modem?" He
told me my computer couldn't support one, so I went over to a store on
Queens Boulevard where three Chinese-American kids were assembling
computers and I bought a 386, with a modem.

Later, I graduated to a 486 and then a Penta. By that time, Al Gore had
invented the Internet and the floppies were 3 1/2", so I emailed my
articles and followed up with floppies. Faster computers, faster modems,
faster dial-up speeds and then, ta daa, DSL, Cable and FIOS. Now I have a
wireless laptop that has enough computing power to run the combined
governments of seven African countries and the Serbian Air Force.

What does this teach us? As far as I am concerned, the way to guarantee
that a piece of electronic equipment will sell for a drastically lower
price is for me to buy it. Immediately after, the price drops, but not
until my "no strings refund" period has expired.

Leon

I have a pentium I that I will gladly donate to anyone from a Third World
country.
