Comedians who tell the "traditional" jokes are sometimes among the
millions
of Jewish children who respect, love and nurture their aged parents.
Among
my friends I can name dozens who have cared and are caring for parents.
My
sister and I (especially my sister) did everything we could to make our
parents' declining years comfortable, as did most of the Jews of my
generation.
Even if my mother wanted to know why I couldn't stop off at their home in
the Bronx on the way home from work and I tried to explain (a) the Bronx
is
not on the way to North Woodmere on the south shore of Long Island where
I
live from Sheepshead Bay on the south shore of Brooklyn where I worked
and
(b) I had spent the evening with her two days ago. I received a phone
call
from my father later that evening asking when they were going to see me,
to
which I replied that I had seen them two days ago and I would see them on
the next weekend. At the time, I must admit I was annoyed but looking
back,
I am glad that they loved me enough to want to see me as often as they
could.
It isn't so bad, getting old with most of your "marbles" intact, but it
must
be tough living with imperfect recall and feelings of isolation. So let's
ease up on the "old Jewish mother" jokes and dig up some ungrateful child
sharper than a serpent's tooth (King Lear) jokes.
Hey, the wooden spoon story. A man who reluctantly took his aged father
in
when his mother died was annoyed by the rattling sound the old man's
spoon
made in his trembling hand when he ate, decided to get a wooden spoon for
his father. Although it made eating difficult the old man used it without
complaint. One afternoon the man saw his small son whittling something in
the garden. "What are you making?" he asked and the child happily held up
his handiwork. "It's a wooden spoon for you, when you get old."
Sigh. That's all right. You don't have to reply. I'll just sit here in
front
of the blank screen and wait.

Feh! If I wasn't visiting my 94 year old mother twice a week, 120
miles round trip, to give my sister, who cares for her and with whom
she chose to live (we offered, but her siblings still live nearer
Sis), I would take offense at your comments.

I have no idea what you find insulting. Is it because you want to make jokes
at the expense of old Jewish mothers? I don't think so. Is it because I told
the wooden spoon joke? Why is that insulting? I thought my post was
sympathetic to our elderly parents and those of us who are happy we can make
their lives more pleasant.
If I have insulted you, dear Maxine, that was not my intention. In fact, I
didn't think I insulted anybody.
