I was driving in northern Minnesota (Virginia) on a busy highway. I saw a duck with a brood of six ducklings standing at the side of the road (lots of traffic) waiting for a break in the traffic for her to cross. I pulled over and watched a while as she made an occasional attempt to cross and then turned back. With an OK from my wife I got out of the car and started flagging down traffic to stop. They did and and the family of seven crossed without incident. I also found in a traffic island in a five way intersection in Park Ridge, Illinois (the town that gave us Hillary) a duck with a brood of 4 that had nested in the traffic island. I guess she went for food late at night when traffic was sparse.

Reminds me of the children's book "Make Way for the Ducklings", where a Boston cop stops traffic so mama duck and the ducklings can cross to the Public Gardens.

Some years back, we were in Katmandu, at a street corner with maybe the only traffic light in the city. A man came along the sidewalk with a small flock of turkeys. He kept them waiting for the light to turn green, then had trouble getting them to start moving. Just as they did start to cross, a fire truck came along, and he man had to shoo them back onto the sidewalk. Then the turkeys really refused to move. It was one of the few times I wished I had a videocam.
