Additaments? Where? Show me.
A banner? Sure, as an occasional avatar. But on the question of
*banners* there *is* consistency from country to country: if you have
arms, you can display them on a banner just as freely as on a shield.
Even in the Scottish heartland of regulated heraldry.

There is a difference between a banner and a standard. As I understand
it, any armiger can display a banner but only barons and above can
display a standard (so knights and baronets are excluded because they
are mere peasants - joke). Personally, I can't see why anyone who
isn't entitled to a standard would insist on using one because a
banner (a square flag, as I understand it) is just as attractive. It
seems that the standard maintains the proper old order of things, so
that feudal barons are ranked properly amongst the higher nobility and
knights and baronets have to sit at the bottom of the table. Yipee!
Terrific!
But seriously, folks, heraldry must have rules and these must be
consistent as far as possible and followed. Otherwise confusion reigns
(Q: If confusion reigns is he entitled to a standard?)
By the way, I trust you have all bought copies of the biography of my
great-great-grandmother. See:

You've echoed my words exactly Graham. If the authortative (truely
knowledgeable) parties who run these various collectives would simply
apply some consistent standards (no pun intended), then these mistakes
won't happen.
