Hereunder, the PQs presented on Oct. 2nd with the Minister's written
reply below.
National Library.
325. Deputy Mary Upton asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and
Tourism the advice he has received from the board of the National
Library of Ireland in respect of its recent decision to suspend its
heraldic services pending clarification of the legal basis under which
the National Library of Ireland provides such services; and if he will
make a statement on the matter. [21419/07]
326. Deputy Mary Upton asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and
Tourism the legislative action he will take in relation to the
sections of the National Cultural Institutions Act, 1997 in relation
to the granting of arms; and if he will make a statement on the
matter. [21420/07]
327. Deputy Mary Upton asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and
Tourism if he will bring forward new legislation in the form of a
Genealogy and Heraldry Bill to provide a sound legal basis for the
State's heraldic services; and if he will make a statement on the
matter. [21422/07]
Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism (Deputy Séamus Brennan): I
propose to take Questions Nos. 325 to 327, inclusive, together.
The Director of the National Library has recently written to my
Department in relation to a number of legal matters pertaining to the
Board of the Library. These matters are currently being examined by my
Department.

Here is an update on the campaign by the Genealogical Society of
Ireland to have a proper legislative basis provided for the State's
delivery of heraldic services by the Chief Herald of Ireland.
At the request of the Genealogical Society of Ireland, Dr. Mary Upton,
TD, has today (Oct. 2nd) tabled the following Parliamentary Questions
in Dáil Éireann to the Minister for Arts, Sport & Tourism, Mr. Séamus
