Ah, but I wasn't talking about the sporge postings, I was talking

If you're using Google, there is little one can do; you're in for some
weeks
of heavy uphill sledding as you try to follow the group. To be able to
filter
out or even just to see the headers en masse and mark them as read,
you
need
software designed for Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) such as
Xnews
(freeware) or Forte's Agent ($). Of course this presupposes you have
access to
an NNTP server through your ISP or some other source (I use Giganews
because
my ISP dropped NNTP because they couldn't make enough money from it).

Many thanks to Barbara, Andrew and others who have so clearly
explained this situation to luddites like myself. I usually follow by
google because I am too dim to use news-servers and the like. I shall
don my hard-hat and retreat to the cellar for as long as the nonsense
lasts - see you all once it's done!

Cheers, Michael

Hello Michael,

Any wine in that cellar?

I had a thought. [Warning. Low tech. Low tech.] All the sporged headers
I
have seen have no less than four words. Until this passes we should all
post new headers with one word simple headers, making the wheat
recognizable
from the chaff.

I've been reading this newsgroup for too many years to just walk out.

I'm not familiar with this type of spam raid, can Barb or somebody
explain exactly what this is? And who benefits by it?

I can't for the life of me imagine how anyone benefits from this.- Hide quoted text -

That's part of what I'm asking: is this thing simply net vandalism? or
does it have a darker purpose? It seems to be something of an email
bomb - those went around in the 90s.

I had hoped Barb could explain what this was. I have a PC. It seems
that there are more than a few people perpetrating this... and how
long can we expect this to last? and...it would be to Google's benefit
to secure the usernet group against this sort of thing.

I'd be happy to.

Yes, it's net-vandalism, pure and simple. The twits who do this do so
because they're mad at someone or some group, or just because they
feel like it.

There don't have to be very many people involved at all, between bots
and trojans. (A bot is a program that has only one purpose and will
keep doing that thing over and over again unatteneded. Bots can be
written to vote in online polls, spam individuals, spam, sporge or
flod groups, or do almost anything else that can be done on line.
Trojans are viruses that take over infected computers and run programs
off of them, with the real owners unaware. Lots of trojans are set up
to send spam-- that way the real owner of the computer gets the blame,
and the spammer doesn't.) Both bots and trojans can be used to spam a
newsgroup. The one that we're being hit with appears to be capturing
posts off some other group, and resending them to sci.crypt and
rec.heraldry.

How long will it last? There's no way of knowing. It could be a week.
It could be a month. Truthfully, it could be indefinite. It depends on
if and when they decide to turn their attentions to another group.

As to Google securing against this sort of thing, the newsgroups don't
belong to Google. They don't belong to anybody. (Well, moderated ones
do, sort of, but non-moderated ones don't.) Google Groups is simply an
access point to Usenet groups.

There are lots of other access points; these are called news servers
or NNTP servers. Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers -- the way you
connect to the internet at all -- in your case, Comcast) offer NNTP
access; some don't. There are also independent news servers (Giganews,
Newsguy, and aioe.org are three.) Some independents are free, some
require a set-up fee but have no recurring charge, some require a
monthly or annual payment.

To use an NNTP server, you need a news reader or a news client (same
thing, different names.) That's a program that connects to the server
and fetches the posts from the groups you want to your computer.

I'm working on a post of how to set up both a connection to a free
server and a free newsreader so that you good folks who are stuck with
Googlecan leave it behind.

Barb
