Charles, a Chara,

The Republic of Ireland Act, 1948
http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1948_22.html passed by the Oireachtas
(Irish Parliament) provided for the description of the State as the
Republic of Ireland whereas, the Constitution declares that the name of
the State is Éire or in the English language, Ireland.

The Republic of Ireland Act, 1949 (Westminster) was passed by the
British to give effect in British law to that the fact that the Irish
had declared the State to be a Republic and left the British
Commonwealth of Nations. It also declared that the 26 counties of the
Republic were no longer part of His Majesty's Dominions etc.

The 1949 Act was nothing more than legislative housekeeping by the
British, it was not, as some may think, sanctioning the Irish Act of
1948 as Westminister had no such competence since 1922. But what it is
surprising is that the Arms of the United Kingdom were not altered to
give effect to the amened extent of His Majesty's realms as had
happened in 1801 and again in 1837. Possibly, that should have
happened when King George VI died and the present British queen
ascended the throne of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern
Ireland on Feb 6th 1952.

Is this not further complicated, in that the present Queen was in fact
originally styled from her accession as "Queen of the United Kingdom of
Great Britain and Ireland", the style being altered to "and Northern
Ireland" only in 1953?

(e.g. the Queen's proclamation to the House of Lords in mid-February
1952, appointing her first Royal Commission - to convey the Royal
Assent to Parliamentary bills - styled her "Elizabeth Regina, Elizabeth
the Second, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, Ireland and of the
British Dominions beyond the Seas Queen, Defender of the Faith".)
