I have no idea who he is. I assumed that since he was wearing the tabard, he must be the Chief Herald of Ireland. What should the caption say?

PS I think there was a Lyon Depute at one time. Presumably he could have worn the Lyon's tabard. Could this not be a parallel case here?

Michael,

I have put some more photos on the page, including some group shots including the Chief Herald of Ireland. Unfortunately, the Chief Herald of Ireland is partly obscured by a lady. I have also added a shot of him in the procession but this is a still captureed from a video camera and so not of such good quality. The originals are much larger of course. If you want a copy of any of the photos please let me know. Some of these photos have been published in the latest issue of the SGS Journal, due out about now. I am sure that there are many better pictures taken by others.

As a specialist in genealogical and heraldic imposture, I was alarmed to think that a bogus Chief Herald of Ireland could have paraded through the streets of St Andrews: http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/, click 'What's New'. While indeed he looks like a premier office holder, dressed in tabard with the harp arms of the Irish state, this is in fact Mr Ó Comáin, herald consultant, and not Mr Gillespie, Chief Herald. A simple case of a captioning error no doubt, but again raising questions concerning the Irish representative's extraordinary, in a republican context at least, garb.

Subject to correction of course, but I would imagine the caption should read 'Micheál Ó Comáin, Herald Consultant, Office of the Chief Herald of Ireland'.
