Masons, was Re: Prince Michael of Albany

I agree that the Catholic Church issued several Bulls against
Freemasonry. It is my opinion that they are worried by any organization
that does not demand that a person's relationship with God must occur
in a "church". While every Mason is counseled to worship in the manner
that he has always undertaken and with which he is most comfortable,

The Catholic Church responded negatively to masonry because it was first and
foremost an anti-clerical movement, embraced by those hostile to the Church. It
would indeed be surprising if it had welcomed an organization whose members were
dedicated to its destruction.

That it flourished in several Protestant countries and was not there seen
as incompatible with Christian faith, is unsurprising since these countries
were themselves extremely hostile to Catholicism with powerful legal penalties
directed at Catholics. An organization that confirmed them in their prejudices
was perfectly in confomrity with the national and religious ethos of the time.

There is no reason why Catholics should be hostile to protestant masonic
bodies, even though lingering anti-Catholicism still exists in some of the
Protestant Churches (the 39 articles of the Church of the England, for example,
and the theological teachings of the Scottish Presybyterian Church,
still include harsh language condemning in extravagant terms aspects of
catholic theology). I have no idea whether the Swedish protestant Church
still retains the old-fashioned rhetoric of Reformation protestantism in its
official teachings; if so, then perhaps it is not so suprising that there is
some uniformity between protestants and masons.
