Re: Personal Protection from Bears

I would be a little skeptical about the stories you hear. People have
a tendency to stretch it a bit, not unlike the fish that got away.
When I was up state N.Y. and through Pennsylvania the bear stories
were only equal to the movie Jaws. I've hunted miles of trails and
though seeing signs of bears the few that I actually saw were beating
feet in the opposite direction. People love spreading what they hear
and add a little extra as it goes around town, and it must be true as
long as it originated from the local donut shop.

It sounds to me your new to the area or at least bears. Before trying
to zap one with a cattle prod or Tazer (not a good idea) I would get
some schooling in bear behavior. Bears in general don't care for us
humans, it's the yummy goodies we leave behind that attracts them and
how they are labeled problem bears, go figure.

Bear proof your property and chances are you'll never see one. When
camping, there again do what is recommended by the park service to
bear proof you sight but get educated in bear behavior before you
choose the wrong approach. Bear mace or pepper spray formulated for
bears is probably your best bet and no doubt the number one
recommendation if actually attacked where a firearm is not allowed but
not all bear attacks are created equal or lethal as you will learn.
They are great pretenders...
