# # Hi Folks,
# # It's time for my yearly exam again and I would like to know if there

# Good question for a lot of shooters. If the issue is just getting a good
# prescription, here in NV my optometrist understands that for my trifocals,
# the lower lens is for reading, the middle lens is set for handgun front
# sight distance, and the top lens is for distance. I know another shooter
# that has bifocals and reverses the order and puts the front sight distance
# on top because he likes to lean forward in a tactical stance while shooting
# handguns and look at the sights through the top of his glasses. For an
# opthalmologist (vice optometrist) examination you probably want to let him
# know if you shoot guns that have a strong recoil or muzzle blast as that
# might (I don't know for sure) have some effect on eyes that have a physical
# weakness, such as in the retina.

I would also add that if you are over 50, don't just assume you will
need a stronger prescription. Last time I went (at age 54) my myopia had
lessened to the point that I could go back to reading without reading
glasses (I wear contacts) and I could use iron sights fairly well. The
optometrist told me that was common. I mentioned it to my 82 year old
mother, who replied that though she still wore glasses, she didn't
really need to anymore. Sure enough, her lenses were hard to tell from
plain glass.
So at 56, I'm sitting here looking at my computer screen and
trying to decide if it looks better with reading glasses, or without.
It's about a wash.
