Re: What loads are used for turkey hunting?

That's quite an interesting scenario. The victim was sitting *in a tree*,
in a squatters chair?

For the record, a shotgun is the preferred gun for turkey. In many, if not
most states, it's the only legal gun. Turkey hunting pretty much requires a
head shot to ensure a kill, and depending on the range you can expect to
pull a few pellets out of the breast, even with a good head shot. Ranges up
to 30 yards are not uncommon and a shotgun, even with an extra full choke or
a turkey choke, will open up to a pretty good pattern at that range.

What does it take to kill a human, though? The article says nothing about
the range, where the victim was hit, etc. Do some turkey hunters do it all
wrong? That's the kind of question I hate to see when so little information
is provided. It almost boarders on speculation. It's possible the shooter
was using a rifle, but that might also be legal where he hunts. It's also
possible he was using a shotgun at 15-20 yards. There is certainly the
potential for enough damage at those ranges, to kill. That does not make
the weapon or the ammo inappropriate for turkey hunting.

It's always difficult to read about accidental shootings in the woods.
Hunting in cammo always requires a lot more diligence than hunting with
blaze orange, and I guess that human factor sneaks in from time to time. In
a situation like this, both hunters really have to be on the ball. When
you're sitting there nearly invisible in your surroundings, you really have
to be on the watch for other hunters, and make sure they know you're there,
as much as you expect them to be alert and know you're there. Sometimes the
cammo works like it should, the gun works like it should, the human doesn't.
