Hi Ridcully,

Vacuum sealing is a little over the top, but removing most of the
oxygen will slow oxidation (rust).

There will be those who will dis-agree with me.

As long as you keep your gun fairly clean overall and clean and lube
the gun well before putting it away over for longer periods of
storage, you won't have any trouble. Vacuum sealing in addition to
this is a little anal, but it will help. Especially for keeping
moisture away.

OTOH, a .50 cal metal ammo can with seals and some desicant will
achieve the same thing.

Make certain no gun oil get sucked into the vacuum packer. That stuff
isn't good for you.

Don't sweat the ammo, it will be fine in its box. You suggest 120
degree spread in temp. Technically this will degrade the powder. But
frankly, ammo has a very long shelf life and you are not going to
notice degradation for at least 10yrs and more like 50yrs. Vacuum
sealing will not help the ammo and might help speed degradation
through presure imbalance.

As far as steel vs. plastic guns. Either gun requires care. Isn't
any tougher to keep a steel gun in good shape than a plastic one.
Just a little different. Presuming the plastic gun is good at -30, no
reason not to have one if you like that kind of thing.
