In 1999 I got a handi rifle in 45/70 and wondered for which of the three
categories it should be loaded:
1) Trapdoor originally 10 kpsi black powder, load books say 22,000 psi,
and folklore has it that they blow up at 55k psi
2) Lever action Marlins kept to 28kpsi by load books
3) 98 Mausers and Ruger #1s kept to 35 kpsi by load books.
I got some help from here on rec.guns from a mechanical engineering
professor and from my father, chief engineer of many gun designs, in
analyzing the strength. I learned about Lame's formula, section modulus,
and the pin in double sheer.
I determined that the rifle is much stronger than the brass.
I got flames on line.
I validated the calculations by shooting double loads of #1 Ruger max loads.
"Lyman's 47th" 1992 says:
385 cast gr cast, 17.5 gr Unique, 1411 fps, 38,500 cup, for Ruger #1
I have shot 32 gr Unique 405 gr hard case with lube bands in the handi
rifle ~88,000 psi per Quickload. The brass flows into the extractor mis
fit in the chamber.
And then more flames [and I am banned from graybeards] for me in
reaction to my tests.
I blame myself.
Trying to communicate to gun culture consumers on line with engineering
like calculations and data is just asking for flames.
What does it all mean?
1) The Handi Rifle / H&R 45/70 is way stronger than the brass, but kicks
too hard with trapdoor loads.
2) And as usual, the load book are wrong about everything.
3) People who want to live in fear and ignorance may be in the majority.
