Welcome to the real world... the world of UPS/FEDEX at least...
Do to the real risk of theft by their own employee's, they require the
more expensive overnight shipping. Overnight shipping has more
stringent controls on who handles the package and who's responsible for
it (and its loss).
You've got three choices.
Take it to your local FFL and ask him to send it via the USPS. He can
do that, you can't... only an FFL can ship a handgun via the Post
Office. USPS shipping is much less in cost although you'll pay a fee to
the FFL. My local FFL charges $25 for his time going to the Post Office.
Put it in a large package. One that is large enough to contain a
rifle/shotgun. When they ask the package contents tell them it's a
firearm. Don't say handgun/revolver/pistol. All you're required to
tell them is that it's a firearm. It's THEIR policy to ship handguns
via overnight (and costly) service. You are required to inform them if
you're shipping a firearm. Let them assume it's a rifle because of the
package size. Then ship it via ground at a cheaper rate.
or,
Pay whatever they're asking...
BTW, my understanding of the BATF rules are that you can ship it to an
FFL yourself. That it's not required that the shipper also be an FFL.
However, some FFL's are hesitant to receive firearms from a private
party. They will often require a photocopy of the shippers Drivers
License or other good ID.
My advice is worth exactly what you've paid for it.
