Re: Why it makes no sense to buy a cheap scope.

Having worked for Zeiss Optical-Germany in conjunction with the US
Navy on the KS-153B program (the recon cameras installed in the AF18
Hornet aircraft) I feel qualified to tell you Mr HiPower you know
nothing of optics and their workings.
Long tubes vs. short tubes is pretty much irrelevant with todays
modern technology. The quality of the lens and it's series of lenses
that are important...such as clarity...edge to edge sharpness...depth
of view...light gathering capabilities and all the other technical
aspects to make superior optics. Most of how a lens is judged is not
even capable of being deteced by the naked eye...it requires
specialized equipment.
Over 20 years of experience as a commercial photographer, licensed
pilot and licensed aircraft mechanic gave me the unique experience to
qualify me to work for Zeiss...that along with a formal education in
AutoCad. You might be surprised to know that their recon cameras'
longest lens is far shorter than any normal length scope on the market
and it is of such high resolution it can read a license plate from 20
miles away (slant angle)!
A 50mm lens is not more difficult to make than a 40mm....more time
consuming...but not more difficult. The same rules apply to both
lenses in their making...grinding and polishing.
Japanese lenses are first rate in several brands of scopes....the
original Tascos come to mind. It wasn't until Bushnell took them over
and the lenses were made by the Chinese that quality began to
suffer!!!!!!
I have several older Tascos...a 4x16 and a 6x24 that work wonderfully
although at their highest magnification edge-to-edge sharpness isn't
great but I'm not shooting at anything in the edges. This is a problem
almost all scopes have ...even the high priced ones...but as long as
my "cheapo" scopes remain bright and clear and return to zero
consistently I'll keep them on my rifles and save my money for other
things...like a new rifle!
Do I own any Zeiss scopes? No...I can't justify the cost of one even
with my discount...not the high end ones anyway and the scopes I do
have work well so why mess with sucess??
